この本は，データ解析環境・言語「R」の基礎について書かれた良著です．

統計学を学ぶ本ではないですので，もし統計学の基礎を学ばれたい方は，
「垂水 共之, 飯塚 誠也著(2006)『R/S-PLUSによる統計解析入門』共立出版」
もあわせて読むことをお勧めいたします．（<-よくまとまっており，わかりやすいと思います．）

この本（「データ解析環境『R』」）は，
(0.)インストール（Win, Mac, Vine Linux）の仕方，
(1.)基本的な計算（四則演算）や変数への代入，基本的な関数，ヘルプの参照方法，
ライブラリーの読み込み方などの基本的な操作から，
(2.)ベクトルや行列，データ・フレームなどのデータオブジェクトの作成・扱い方，
(3.)基本的な図の描写（散布図や箱ひげ図，ヒストグラム，円グラフなど）の仕方，
(4.)簡単なデータ分析の仕方
(5.)関数の定義の仕方など（おまけ程度）
について書かれています．

どれも，Rを使う際において，必ず必要となる基本的な知識です．
ただ，この本だけで終わるともったいないと思います．

次のステップとしては，「舟尾 暢男著(2005)『The R Tips』九天社」をお勧めいたします．
逆に「The R Tips」を読んでよく分からないという方は，この本を読むとよいでしょう．

この本だけで，ともかく R を始めることができるという一冊です．
基本操作からグラフィックスの作成，また基本的な統計的分析につ
いても簡単に触れられていますので，R で何ができるのか，そして
Excelとはどう違うのかを実感することができます．
値段も手頃ですし，迷うぐらいならまず買ってしまうことをお勧め
する一冊です．

初心者が初めて「R」を使う時のマニュアルにはちょうど良い．Excelをもちいて講義をしている大学の先生方によんでもらい是非「R」の良さを知ってもらいたい．この本で「R」の基本を学んだ後に，著者である舟尾さんの「The R Tips」を片手に統計解析（統計，解析の知識については別途，自分で参考書を用意する必要がある）をすればよいのではないでしょうか．
また，薬屋さんらしくSASデータセットの読み込み方も載ってます．
初心者の方は，先に発売されている竹内さんの「はじめてのS-PLUS/R言語プログラミング」と見比べて，自分に合うのを選べば良いのではないでしょうか．
