世間から隔絶された18世紀の修道院を舞台にした神秘主義的哲学小説。堕落し形骸化した信仰に抗し、イエスの福音の真実を継承しようとした修道士スピリディオンの生涯を、孫弟子アレクシが自らの精神的彷徨と重ねて語る。アレクシもスピリディオン同様カトリックの現実に絶望、一時プロテスタンティズムに傾き、ついで18世紀の無神論的哲学に惹かれる。が、最後にキリスト教を超える新しい信仰「永遠の福音」の教えを、スピリディオンの墓を暴いて発見、そこに人類全体の連帯と解放の夢を聞き取り、迫り来るフランス革命に、夢の一部の具体化を感じる。正統の中から生まれた異端的思想こそ未来を担うものであることを、サンドは主人公たちの生き方を通して描いた。
