ユニバーサルクラシックスのHPによると，このDVDは，1996年10月 ミュンヘン、ヘルクレスザールにおけるライヴ収録（クライバー指揮 バイエルン国立管弦楽団）で，ブラームス４番のほかに，モーツァルトの交響曲 第33番，ベートーヴェン序曲《コリオラン》が収録されている模様である。
クライバーには独自の美的世界があった。90年代に入ってからの彼は，もともと少なかった指揮回数がさらに減り，かつてに比べると精彩を欠く演奏も少なくなかったようである。が，それでも，海賊版で聴く限り，ブラームスはいうまでもなく，モーツァルトの33番も，他の指揮者とは全く異質のスタイリッシュな演奏になっている。そんな演奏をやっと映像で見られるのは幸せなことである。

大学生の頃、友達から「コンサートのチケット、余ったから買うてくれへん？一万円でええ」と言われ、「高っかいなぁ~。ベートーベンの4番と七番？『運命』ならともかく、そんな曲知らんがな！！」と明らさまに文句を言いつつ、「貧乏」な下宿生の私は、非常に嫌々ながらそのチケットを買ってやった。

しかし、大阪・フェスティバル・ホールで聴いたその演奏会は、心の底からぞくぞくする、しかも「また聴きたい！」と思わせるものだった。当時の私は、いわゆる「J-POP」しか興味のない大学生だったのに・・・。

それから「一流」「有名」と言われるクラシックの演奏会に、足を運ぶようになった。しかし、どの演奏会に行っても、あの時聴いたようなようなわくわくするような感覚に巡りあえない・・・。「自分の感性は磨り減ってしまったのだろうか？」と、二十歳前後の私は、本気で悩んだ。

その理由がわかったのは、その「チケットを買ってやった」事件から、10年後である。

その演奏会の指揮者は「カルロス・クライバー」だったのだ。

いきなり桁の違うものを聴いてしまった私は、それ以外のものを受け付けなくなっていたのだった。今思えば、「とても、まともな感性」と言える。

そのクライバーが指揮者としては、若くして亡くなってしまったのが悲しい。ああ、カルロス！！私も叫びたい。

１９９６年クライバーの映像でみることのできる最晩年の勇姿であろうと思われる。私が衛星放送を録画したものからみるかぎり、その流麗な指揮ぶりと音楽性は一層深みをましているかに見える。こうした映像をみるとベートベンの第九とかモーツアルトの４０番シンフォニイとかいろいろな曲をききたくさせる指揮者だった。心よりご冥福を。
