人種　宗教　哲学　言語　文化ありとあらゆるものの坩堝とたとえられるインドの哲学の本質は何かと聞かれても簡単に答えられる人はそうそういない。インドに行ってきて、したり顔でインド哲学を語るのも野暮というもの。誰でも語れるけれど誰も正鵠を射にくいのがインドというものなのか? 作者はあえてマンガという読みやすい媒体を使い、読者が共感しやすい少年の行動や心象風景を通じて、間接的にこれを描き出そうとしている。この試みはかなり成功しいるように感じられる。また必要に応じてインドの宗教　哲学　文化などに対して判りやすい解説のページを用意しているのも好感が持てる。これからインドに行く人にとって普通の旅行ガイドブックよりはるかに良い指南書ではないか。

２００１〜２００５年までカルカッタを拠点にして、西ベンガル州の水力発電ダムの建設プロジェクトに従事してましたので、アチャール君になった気分で、小暮さんの漫画の世界に浸れました。２冊購入して、早速、インドの後輩に送りました。現地で、仕事ばかりしていると、見えないことも多く、小暮さんの本で、あっそうだったんだ・・と気づかされることも多かったです。近年発行の数多いインド本の中でベストでは？

インドのアチャールくんは、「超格差先進都市」コルカタで日々を生き抜くみなしごの男の子だ。
コルカタは、麻薬あり、犯罪あり、裏切りあり…とまさになんでもありのカオス国家インドの
そのまたカオスの街。
アチャールくんは、そんなカオスの中で、ときに裏切りにあい、ときに悪に手を染めながらも
日々を淡々と生きている。必要悪に手を染めながらも最低限のプライドを守りながら生き抜く
彼の姿を見ていると、自然と自分の生き方と向き合わざるを得ない。
大きな困難が連発しながらも、日常の中の小さな幸せや出会いを大切にする。そんなアチャール
くん、そしてインドの人々の生き方を知り、幸せとは何かを考えた。

インドに比べて日本は幸せだ…、そんな安易なメッセージではない。「生きること」とは何か？
幸せとは何か？　そんな著者の問いかけが、読み終えた後身に迫ってくる。
ずしんと来るけれど、とても爽やかな読後感を味わった。
