πとはいったい何者?円周率と名づけてはみたものの、値も素性も詳しくはわからぬままに始まったπの歴史。それは人類の歴史を映しだす小さな鏡だった。シラクサのアルキメデス、紀元前3世紀のアレキサンドリア大学、科学書に火をつけ焼き払った中世の司祭や十字軍の物語であったし、中国や日本の和算家の物語でもあった。その後、πは円とほど遠い意外な場面に姿を見せ始める。オイラーの数値計算は、ある規則の分数を加えてπの2乗や26乗を発見する!興味深いエピソードやあふれるユーモアを通して、数式に弱い人にも読書欲をかきたてるπの歴史物語。

著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

ベックマン,ペートル
1924‐1993年。プラハ生まれ。プラハ工業大学でPh.D.を取得。1963年コロラド大学電気工学の客員教授となり、そのまま永住。自身の生い立ちから、歴史への関心も高く、カトリシズム、ナチズム、共産主義への嫌悪感を隠さない(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

非常に読み応えのある、興味深い内容にみちた書であるが、いかんせん原書が30年以上まえに書かれたものであるため、最先端の数学専攻の学生等にとっては、いささかデータが古いであろう。

さりながら、一般向けの数学本としては文句のない水準に達している。高校程度の数学 （あとできれば世界史） の知識があれば、内容でつまずくこともないだろう。

身内でやった「πを手計算で計算する」勉強会を開くにあたって、教科書として活用する為に購入しました。
時間の制約から細かい点までを検証する事は出来ませんでしたが、各種の計算方法を比較検討するのに
とても役立ちました。

特に、ヴィエトの方法やアルキメデスの方法など幾何的な説明が充実しているので、ただ単に数式だけが
並ぶことの多いネット情報よりも、とても分かりやすいと思います！！！
（それでも、あっさりとした説明が続くので意味をしっかりと理解するのに１行で２日かかった事も...）

ブルバキは幾何を軽視して理論だけで説明しようとしていると聞きましたが、やはり素人には幾何的な
説明図が豊富な方が助かります。

＃どうしてもこれ１冊では細かい点で困る事が多かったので、私は参考書として「虚数の情緒―中学生からの全方位独学法」を並行活用しました
＃「π(パイ)の神秘」もいいなと思ったんですが、さらっとしすぎています...

古代キリシア以前から現代に至るまでの「π」というものの歴史を平易（といっても内容は濃い）に説いた名著。
いろいろな本で参考図書として紹介されていながら、長らく絶版でしたがこの度、筑摩書房から復刊されました。（以前は蒼樹書房 ）
また、復刊にあたって版も変わったようなので、これは買いです。
