私はとてもクレバーな構造を持った小説だと思いました。まず、認識論についての長い議論という先制パンチがあって、その後その理論をベースに謎解きが進んで行きます。つまり筆者が始めに、こうやって謎解きしますよ、と読者に教え、それから実際に謎を解いてみせるわけです。手の内をまず最初に明かすことを厭わない、というより敢えてやっているところに京極氏の自信の深さが窺えます。でもそれに見合う濃い内容のミステリーでした。

600ページ以上あり、またエンジンがかかるまでの助走がやや長めですが、一旦動き出すと一気に読めてしまいます。ミステリー好きでない人にもお勧めの一冊です。

普通にミステリーの傑作というとトリックや犯人探しに
独自のものがあるものをいうと思うのですが、
この作品は、そういった部分よりも宗教などの人文系の
学問の薀蓄で形成された世界観が唯一無二となっています。

好き嫌いは分かれると思いますが、はまる方には、
めちゃめちゃはまると思います。

分厚くて辟易するかもしれませんが、そういう薀蓄話が
お嫌いでなければ、あっという間に読み終えます。

面白いですよ。

京極夏彦氏の作品には長編が多いです。この話は京極氏の作品としては短いうちに入るうえ、内容面を考慮してもこれから京極氏の本を読んでみようと考えている方には最適だと思います。
京極氏の描くこの独自の世界観は、一度は触れておいて損は無いと思います。自分に合う合わないは別として、新しい単位の物差しを見つけた様な感覚が味わえます。
あと、文章がとても綺麗だという印象を強く受けています。小説や文章の構成などに関しては全くの素人なので、ただの個人的な印象に過ぎないのですが、登場人物の心情描写のあたりの文章は特に、間や言葉が滑らかに感じられてとても好きです。
