柴田 晋平
1954年、兵庫県尼崎市に生まれる。1977年、東北大学理学部卒業、1983年、同大学大学院理学研究科天文学専攻を修了。山形大学理学部物理学科教授。理学博士。専門は、高エネルギー天文学理論、特に、パルサーの磁気圏と粒子加速。NPO法人小さな天文学者の会理事長を務めながら、やまがた天文台の運営など市民とともに「宇宙を、見て、感じて、楽しむ」社会環境構築に奔走中。特許、月と星の早見盤。2004年度NHK東北ふるさと賞受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

5.0 out of 5 stars 現時点で最新の情報が詰まったパルサーの教科書, 2007/10/26
巨大な星が爆発した後に残るパルサー（回転する中性子星）はブラックホールと
同様に、今日の高エネルギー天体物理学で最も興味深い天体である。
物理学的には磁石が高速で回転しているだけのシンプルなシステムなのだが、
想像を絶する~10兆ガウスの磁場が、研究者の度肝を抜く不思議な現象を
引き起こす。

本書ではこれらパルサーからの電磁放射機構、粒子加速機構、パルサー風星雲の
形成に至るまで、今日のパルサー研究の主たる題材ほぼ全てを網羅しており、
この種の天体への理解がどの様に成されたのかが非常に分かりやすく
まとめられている。

本書で紹介されている天体物理は、現時点において学術論文を通してしか
触れられない最新のものであり、今まさに国内外の学会で議論されている
ホットな内容である。それらをほとんど式を使わず、定性的かつ感覚的に
解説しているところに本書の魅力と価値がある。
本書を理解するのに要求される知識は高校物理・数学で十二分であるが、
研究にも十分役立つ充実した内容である。Referenceもしっかりしており、
実際に数式が欲しければ論文をたどることも容易である。

私の知る限り、洋書・和書を含めて最も新しいパルサーの教科書(または参考書)
としてお勧めできる。
